MULTIPLE SENSOR SYSTEMS

Multiple sensors are particularly prone to the 'Hand-off ' problem. Each sensor is an independent system. If one radar is used as a search device and another used as a tracker, the first system must hand off its coordinates to the second system. If the two systems are not co-located on the same point, then an error is passed to the second system. In a time critical situation, (a missile, 15 miles away, will impact in about 27 seconds), there may not be time for a second lock-on, especially since the error remains uncorrected!

Fredwal has delivered a target panel that addresses the multiple sensor situation.

A panel consists of an array of one or more polarized radar horn antennas for several radar systems, a retro-reflector for a laser rangefinder, an IR emitter for an infra-red tracking system and an optical target for precise mechanical/optical alignment.

The panel can be easily mounted on a simple tower. Multiple panels can be used to handle a variety of radar directions.

The RF components are located in a weather proof box behind the target panel.

The Fredwal Delay Target can even be mounted on a vehicle since clutter is eliminated by use of the delay.

All of the targets are controlled remotely by means of a laptop computer. The Operator can select each of the systems separately. The remote controller that distributes power to each of the targets is shown at the bottom of the tower. Current sensing is used to provide the Operator with feedback from the selected target.

The radar parameters such as input/output attenuation, polarization and frequency band can all be selected remotely.

The real-time status of the target systems is returned to the operator.

Each of the separate sensor systems can lock onto a single geometric point. Each system can verify that it is within spec. The operator can be assured that each of his systems, tracks to the same point.

This system has been successfully tested in the field.
