HISTORY

From the earliest days radar operators and technicians have had to know the status of their equipment. Some of the first targets were simple pieces of metal, configured as corner reflectors that were used by technicians to return a signal back to the radar for trouble shooting and alignment.

As equipment became more sophisticated, with capabilities that its inventors never dreamed of, the need for awareness of operational performance advanced as well.

Yet today, with multi-million dollar systems, technicians still use the venerable corner reflector for troubleshooting and alignment because it provides a signal external to the radar that can be used to align the servo system, something that no other piece of equipment regardless of cost can do.  Why? Because for angular alignment the reference signal must come from outside the radar.

The Corner Reflector

A simple corner reflector provides just such a signal. The corner reflector served radar systems well, however there are many limitations to the use of such a primitive tool. For example, it cannot properly address Doppler systems. It is especially subject to clutter which renders its use virtually impossible in many situations, particularly at close range. At long ranges it lacks sufficient gain.

Many of the symptoms of system degradation due to use and misuse of the complex and often delicate components of modern new systems, often go unnoticed until it is too late. Often a system may be called upon for immediate use and unfortunately must be taken out of service until repairs can be made by competent personnel.

Immediate system status

Often under the stress of battle or with the rough and tumble activity of mobile units, the field commander needs to know the immediate status of his support equipment.

The Fredwal Target can provide immediate information on whether the specific system can be relied upon to provide the support that it was designed for. In critical situations, system down time simply must be avoided. To remove a defense system from operational readiness, simply because the exact status was unknown or in doubt, is unthinkable.

The Fredwal Target provides a simple, rugged and inexpensive tool that the radar depot can readily use to evaluate, verify, calibrate and repair the radar systems under its jurisdiction.

With the Fredwal Target the operator can quickly make the evaluation about operational readiness, because the target gives visibility to the system parameters in a real time manner.

As Radar and Defense Systems progress in sophistication and complexity, so should the tools that are used to evaluate and align them.

It doesn't take a multi-million dollar piece of delicate laboratory equipment to align and calibrate a radar system. Fredwal systems are built for the technician and the operator, the men and women who have to do the job in the field and on the range.

The Fredwal Target combines state of the art improvements in the ability to evaluate and align modern Radar systems with the lowest possible cost and convenience.
